Details on the Summit of Maracas Waterfall
The rating of this trek is (8) strenuous
Welcome to Maracas St. Joseph, a former cocoa estate back in the day. Our venture starts on the very popular "Waterfall Road" that leads hikers to the tallest waterfall in Trinidad and Tobago. This hike in particular will carry us at the summit of this waterfall....where very few hikers venture simply because of the intensity of the hike to get you there.
The hike starts on the Waterfall Road (417 feet above sea level). We trek uphill to the small Wasa sub-station, and from there the true hike starts. We head into the forest that was once upon a time a thriving cocoa estate with lots of abandoned cocoa trees just lay there. We endure a steady uphill trek from here onward until we come to a junction where there is another trail that we will be taking on our way back from the waterfall. Elevation here is (686 feet). We continue along the main trail all the way upwards this time through natural rain forest that is literally untouched all the way to the top of the hill. which is (1,650 feet).....at this point, we would've covered 2.3 miles. At the summit, we continue our trek this time along undulating terrain until we reach at a turn off where we now trek downhill until we come to a stream......trek a short way upstream and voila......the waterfall with a beautiful pool awaits you. Great swimming and a bit of relaxation is in order while you catch your breath. The elevation at the waterfall is (1,585 feet) and distance to the waterfall is 2.6 miles.
Leaving the waterfall, we head on back uphill onto the main trail and head downstream until we come at a dead end which is actually the very top of Maracas Waterfall. Actual elevation at the top is (1,532 feet). We stay a bit and enjoy the vistas from the summit before we make our way back downhill. Steady trekking downhill until we come back to the junction we met earlier on our way uphill. At this point, we would've covered 3.7 miles. We make our way back to Waterfall Road Distance covered here at this point is 4.5 miles and elevation is (576 feet).
We now trek further up Waterfall Road and make our way to the actual waterfall where everybody goes which is not far. From the time we reach to Maracas Waterfall, we would've covered 5.5 miles and the elevation at the waterfall is (979 feet). After a short while at the waterfalls, we make our final way to the very little known "Celestine Pool" where you can once immerse yourself in a lovely little pool. Distance covered at this point is 6 miles and we are at 707 feet above sea level. We make our way finally back at the start which obviously will be our finish. Final distance covered 6.8 miles.
